Tassels– the last step in ornamentation

Here is a national award winning artisan, Smt. Bayaben Devji Vankar. She is creating the tassels that appear at the end of a stole, or shawl.

The technique is simple but requires practice. Braid the black yarn with the white ones, knot them together, snip them so they are of equal length, and repeat. It is 5 PM in the evening. She is relaxed, sitting on her veranda in between cooking dinner and watching the door for guests.

These are the artisans who create the details in the handmade clothes that we wear.
